In the New Testament there are a good number of verses that specifically speak of us, the believers in Christ, as those who are still “being saved.” These verses cause many Christians a good deal of trouble, because most believers today only see the side of the truth that says we are “once saved, always saved”; and because they don’t understand such verses, they tend to disregard them or just explain them away; since their sins are forgiven, they can’t imagine there could be any real issue between us and the Lord when we stand before Him at His judgment seat (2 Cor. 5:10).
But, what these other verses show us is that there is indeed another side of the truth regarding our salvation, which it is crucial for us to see if we are to go on with the Lord in a good way. That is, while in one sense we surely are saved already, there is another sense in which we are still being saved. And that is what we have been considering in this series of Notes, “Once Saved, Always Saved, & Being Saved.”
In brief, because we have believed in Christ, we are already saved in relation to the guilt of our sins, since He paid the price on the cross to redeem us; thus, our eternal destiny is already secure. But, we are not yet saved in relation to our being fully conformed to the image of Christ, which is the ultimate goal of our salvation (Rom. 8:29-30). It is in this sense that we are still “being saved,” and it is largely in regard to this that we will give an account before the Lord’s judgment seat, to determine whether or not we will reign with Him during His 1,000 year kingdom on the earth in the coming age.
In fact, we may say we are still in the “process” of being saved, because to experience this aspect of salvation is a life-long process. As the apostle Paul tells us regarding this experience,
We all, with unveiled face, beholding and reflecting as in a mirror the glory of the Lord, are being transformed into the same image from glory to glory, even as from the Lord Spirit.
— 2 Corinthians 3:18
So, this is an ongoing, daily process of transformation, which takes place as we behold “the glory of the Lord.” Amen! Hallelujah for such a daily salvation!
And in speaking of the power of the cross, Paul specifically says that we as the believers in Christ are still “being saved”:
For indeed, the word of the cross is to those who are perishing foolishness, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
— 1 Corinthians 1:18; cf. 1 Corinthians 15:2,
2 Corinthians 2:15
This verse does not say we “have been” saved, but that we “are being saved.”
So, I would stress again that, for us to go on with the Lord in the best way, we must grasp both sides of the truth regarding our salvation. Namely, we surely stand on the fact that we are “once saved, always saved,” but nonetheless, we also believe we are still “being saved.”
So far in this series the verses we have considered along these lines are Romans 5:9-10 and Philippians 2:12-13. In upcoming Notes we will go on to consider some additional verses that show us we are still in the process of “being saved.”
