Brief Notes

“In Him
Was Life”
(5)

“Eternal Life” in John’s gospel
does not mean merely
“to live forever,” but rather,
to have the very
life of God

John 3:16 is, no doubt, the single most famous verse in the entire New Testament; what a promise this is from God!:

For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in Him would not perish, but would have eternal life.

Yet, so many people, when they come to this verse and consider what those who believe in the Lord will gain, read it as “would live forever,” rather than as what it actually says, which is, “would have eternal life.” They do so because, as human beings, our natural concept is altogether focused on being forgiven by God for our sins, so that we will not be punished with eternal damnation, but instead can be blessed to be with God forever.

In the context of John’s gospel, however, that is absolutely not what it means to “have enteral life.”

This gospel shows us that, from the very beginning in eternity past, there was a life within God that He desired to impart into us in order to make us His very own children (John 1:1, 4, 12-13; see “In Him Was Life” • 3). So, whenever we read of “eternal life” in the Gospel of John, we must understand it in this way: it is not merely speaking of “living forever,” but of God’s own divine life.

When we believe, we receive this eternal, divine life (3:15, 16, 5:24, 6:40); if we drink of the “living water” He desires to give us, it will become eternal life springing up within us (4:14); the Lord will give His believers the food that “endures unto eternal life” (6:27); Jesus Himself is the “bread of life” that we can receive by partaking of Him (6:48, 54); if we follow Him we will have “the light of life” (8:23, cf. 1:4); He came to give us this life (10:10); and even, He Himself is this life (11:25, 14:6); and it is this eternal life that gives us the capacity to know God (17:3). And at the end of his gospel John even tells us that the entire reason he wrote it was so we would believe in Jesus Christ and thus have this life:

But these have been written that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that, believing, you may have life in His name.
— John 19:31

How crucial it is, for our going on with the Lord in the best way, to have a clear understanding of the real meaning of “eternal life!” And how significant it is for us to receive this divine, uncreated life of God, which truly is Christ Himself, into us! For when we do receive it, we become the actual children of God, possessing His divine life and nature (2 Pet. 1:4), who as such ones are now in relation with Himself, so that through us He can bring His kingdom to the earth (John 3:3, 5).
