Brief Notes
The Pastor Had a Hard Time With This Question
The interviewer at
Columbia University pressed
him, but he seemed unwilling
to give a direct answer
Recently, in both the Notes I have been sending out and in the episodes of the podcast, I have focused on the “eternal gospel,” which is unveiled in Revelation 14:6-7. My feeling is, this is something Christians very much need to be aware of today, because it gives us the way to answer a question people often have regarding the gospel, namely, What happens to those who never had the opportunity to believe in Jesus?
Then, when I saw the video above a few days ago, in which the late Tim Keller is pressed regarding whether or not Jesus is the only way to God, I was impressed again with how important this is. In the video he seems reluctant to give a direct answer to that question, or to the question of what will be the destiny of the adherents of other religions, despite being pressed on it by the interviewer.
We do not need to be so hesitant in our answer to this type of question. If we are clear that, in addition to the gospel of the grace of Christ by which we are saved as the believers in Christ, there is another gospel in the New Testament, it gives us a basis for answering, in a compelling way, this challenge from those outside the faith. That gospel, as I have been sharing, is the eternal gospel, which is for all those who have not been reached by the gospel of Christ.
If you haven’t yet read the Notes on this topic, the first in the series is here:
“The Eternal Gospel (1): For All Those Who Never Heard”
The episode of the podcast where I consider what is the eternal gospel, is here: Episode #124: Just What Is the Eternal Gospel? And if you would like to listen to the entire 4-part series on the website regarding this topic, go to “A New Podcast Series: ‘The Eternal Gospel.’”
In Him…
