The Books
of 1 & 2 Peter…
…are short, yet cover the entire span of God’s work, from His choosing of the believers in eternity past (1 Pet. 1:2), all the way to His bringing in the new heaven and new earth in eternity future (2 Pet. 3:13).
And in between, they cover so many aspects of the Christian life. In his first letter Peter deals with the basic experiences we must pass through as the believers in Christ, who are “chosen…unto obedience” (1 Pet. 1:2). This includes the many trials we will experience as we walk the path of faith, for, as Peter tells us, “it is the time for the judgment to begin from the house of God” (1 Pet. 4:17). Yet, God has called us “into His eternal glory in Christ Jesus” (1 Pet. 5:10), and so in the end He will bring us safely through to Himself.
Then, from the basic experiences we see in 1 Peter, we go on to the deeper spiritual experiences found in 2 Peter, so that God may deal with all those who oppose His work and ultimately bring in His eternal kingdom;
for….we, according to His promise, are looking for a new heaven and a new earth, in which righteousness dwells.
— 2 Peter 3:13
