In the End, No One Will Be “Free With Regard to Righteousness”
Eventually, all will face God’s judgment,

into the kingdom of God

Early on in his four-volume “Great Prophecies” series, G.H. Pember makes this very sobering comment:
The inhabitants of the earth must awake one morning to find that the Day of the Lord is present.
— Great Prophecies, volume 1, page 26
And as the apostle Paul himself tells us, quoting the prophet Isaiah:
As I live, says the Lord,
Every knee shall bow to Me,
And every tongue shall openly
Confess to God.
— Romans 14:11; cf. Isaiah 45:23
Nonetheless, the people of the world continue to live their lives however they see fit, not willing to recognize that eventually they will be called to account and face God’s judgment for their deeds. As the apostle Peter says,
In the last of days mockers will come with mocking, going on according to their own lusts, and saying, Where is the promise of His coming? For since the fathers fell asleep, all things remain as they were from the beginning of creation.
— 2 Peter 3:3-4
Such ones mock at the thought of the Lord’s return, because they desire to continue in “their own lusts.”
The basic issue, it seems to me, is expressed by the apostle Paul:
For when you were slaves of sin, you were free with regard to righteousness.
— Romans 6:20
In brief, sinners simply wish to remain “free with regard to righteousness.”
For some that means, being free to indulge their sinful passions, as is so evident in society today. For others, though, while they may live lives that are not outwardly so corrupt, they still are not willing to be brought under the authority of Christ; they simply want to live their lives as they see fit. And yet, God’s judgment will come upon them, too.
How can we rescue such ones from having to face God’s judgment for their sins? This requires a spiritual struggle, with much prayer. When the Lord called Paul, He told him He was sending him,
…To open their eyes, to turn them from darkness to light and from the authority of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and the portion allotted to them among all those who have been sanctified by faith in Me.
— Acts 26:18; see also “The Key to the Gospel (1): “To Open Their Eyes”
Surely this commission the Lord gave to Saul, to which he was so faithful, applies to us as well.
So, may the Lord grant us the wisdom and boldness to be faithful to Him today, to pray for others and to share the gospel with those around us, so they may indeed be saved through faith in Christ and transferred from Satan’s kingdom, and the judgment he will face, into the kingdom of God.
