“As You Read It, You Can Understand”
By revelation the mystery
was made known to me, as I have
briefly written already,
by which, as you read it, you can
understand my insight
in the mystery
of Christ
— Ephesians 3:3-4 —
The apostle Paul had a special, even unique, portion in the Lord’s New Testament ministry. That is, it was given to him to “complete the word of God,” by presenting to the nations the “mystery” of “Christ in You, the hope of glory”; this had been hidden away in previous ages and generations (Col. 1:26-27). Ultimately, this mystery consummates in the great mystery of “Christ and the church” (Eph. 5:32), which was also unknown in previous generations (Eph. 3:5).
As Paul makes clear in the verses above, these things were revealed to him by the Lord’s special revelation; what a blessing he had to receive such revelations directly from God!
But do you realize, as the believers in Christ today we nonetheless have, in one respect, a very distinct advantage over Paul in terms of understanding the mysteries of God? That is, we do not need to wait for the Lord’s special revelation, like Paul did; rather, as he himself goes on to say,
…by which, as you read it, you can understand my insight in the mystery of Christ.
So today, the revelation of the mysteries is not something that is only with God; rather, it is in our hands, in a book called “the Bible,” and whenever we wish we can open this book and read it and study it and ask the Lord to make His mystery known to us by giving to us, like Paul, “a spirit of wisdom and revelation!” (Eph. 1:17).
May we exercise ourselves to take advantage of this precious gift the Lord has given us and learn to be in the Word in a consistent way, so that we too may come to know the mysteries of God!
