“The Judgment Seat of Christ”
According to the Bible, the focus of God’s work today is to bring His kingdom to this present earth through mankind, whom He created for this very purpose (e.g., Gen. 1:22-27, Matt. 3:2, 4:17, Acts 28:31). This will eventually take place in the coming age, which will be “the Millennium,” the 1,000 year reign of Christ upon the earth. Only after the Millennium will the present heaven and earth be swept away and eternity begin in the new heaven and new earth (Rev. 20:1-6, 21:1).
If we truly desire to understand the Bible, we must be clear about this matter.
First of all, seeing this will give us a much fuller understanding of our salvation in Christ, for we will be able to properly distinguish between what we already have, and what we do not yet have, in Him. That is, on the one hand, we already possess the security of our eternal salvation, for our eternal destiny was settled the moment we believed in Christ; that is God’s free gift to us. On the other hand, we cannot yet have the assurance we will reign with Him in the 1,000 years, for that is not a free gift; rather, we still need to pursue the Lord and be faithful to Him throughout our Christian life if we are to obtain that prize. As the apostle Paul himself said,
Therefore I run in this way: not uncertainly; I box in this way: not as though beating the air; but I buffet my body and make it my slave, lest somehow, having preached to others, I myself should become disapproved.
— 1 Corinthians 9:26-27; cf. 2 Corinthians 5:10
If Paul was concerned he could forfeit the prize, then surely we should be concerned about that as well!
Moreover, when we are clear about the Millennium, we will find that our faith in God’s word, and all the promises we find in it, are very much strengthened, for we shall see how all of God’s promises to Israel will be fulfilled in a literal way. That is, Christ will indeed sit upon the throne of David for that 1,000 year period (e.g., 2 Sam. 7:12-16, Luke 1:31-32).
And we will also be clear regarding how God is dealing with Satan and all his evil efforts to thwart His will, for God today is fulfilling His original purpose of establishing His kingdom upon the earth, using the man whom He created for that very purpose. He will thus defeat Satan and all his opposition and so put him to eternal shame.
Praise the Lord for the coming 1,000 year reign of Christ upon this present earth; Amen and Hallelujah!
