If we desire to grasp the New Testament concept of salvation, in the sense of how we are being transformed into the image or Christ, we must realize we are three-part beings (1 Thes. 5:23, Heb. 4:12). Only then can we truly understand the apostle Paul’s meaning when he tells us,

Therefore we do not lose heart, but though our outer man is being consumed, yet our inner man is being renewed day by day; for our momentary, light tribulation is working out for us, in a more and more surpassing way, an eternal weight of glory.
— 2 Corinthians 4:16-17
