Leaving Egypt (2):
A Night of
Watching Unto
the Lord

24 February 2024

How can we come out
of the world? Only as
those who are watchful
unto the Lord.

The Bible tells us that the night the Children of Israel left the land of Egypt was to be for them, forever,

a night of solemn observance to the LORD for bringing them out of the land of Egypt. This is that night of the LORD, a solemn observance for all the children of Israel throughout their generations.
— Exodus 12:42

Today, in the same way, for us to leave Satan’s world system behind is no small thing; it requires us to be ever watchful unto the Lord all during this time of the world’s dark night (1 John 2:8, Col. 1:13; cf. Luke 22:53).

God Himself must do so much to bring us out, just as He had to send the plagues to bring the Children of Israel out of Egypt; but, leaving the world also requires something of us, namely, that we would be watchful unto the Lord. If, in contrast, we are careless and not watchful, we will not be able to escape from the darkness of the world system.

All throughout the New Testament we see the warnings of how we need to watch and stay alert; we must not take these warnings lightly! In particular, the prospect of the Lord’s soon return should cause us to watch:

Therefore, watch! For you do not know the day on which your Lord will come.
— Matthew 24:42; cf. 25:13

Watch and pray that you may not enter into temptation! The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.
— Matthew 26:41

Beware! Watch! For you do not know when the time is.
— Mark 13:33

You also be ready! For the Son of Man is coming at an hour you do not think.
— Luke 12:40

But watch at all times, beseeching that you may prevail to escape all these things that are about to happen and stand before the Son of Man.
— Luke 21:36

Be sober; watch! Your adversary, the Devil, walks about as a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour.
— 1 Peter 5:8

We are also charged not to sleep:

It is already the hour for you to be raised from sleep, for now our salvation is nearer than when we believed.
— Romans 13:11; cf. 1 Thessalonians 5:6-7

Awake, sleeper,
And rise up from the dead,
And Christ will shine on you!
— Ephesians 5:14

Again, we must give earnest heed to such warnings; they are not in the New Testament for nothing. They make it clear that if we do not watch, we will not be able to leave the world behind today, nor will we be prepared for the Lord’s return in the future:

Therefore, watch! For you do not know the day on which your Lord will come.
— Matthew 24:42
