A Name Written on His Garment and on His Thigh
A simple reminder of
who is the real ruler
over the kings of
the earth
This morning, as I was looking at the book of Revelation, I was just reminded of a simple truth, which I thought I would pass along to you. I thought it might be an encouragement on this day when, on the one hand, we gather together to worship the Lord, and on the other, we see all the pillars of our society seeming to be crumble around us.
Each of the four Gospels records the mocking title Jesus bore on the top of His cross. (The variations in each Gospel remind us that, to get the complete picture of who Jesus is, we need all four of these accounts.)
In Matthew 27:37 that title is,
THIS IS JESUS,
THE KING OF THE JEWS.
In Mark 15:26 it is,
THE KING OF THE JEWS.
In Luke 23:38 it is,
THIS IS THE KING
OF THE JEWS.
And in John 19:19 it is,
JESUS THE NAZARENE,
THE KING OF THE JEWS.
This was a sign of how completely the world rejected its rightful ruler.
But on the day when heaven is finally opened and the Lord descends from heaven, all the mocking will be over. And then in Revelation 19:16 we read the title He will bear at that time, on His garment and on His thigh; it is quite a different one, and one of the last titles of Christ in the entire Scripture:
KING OF KINGS AND
LORD OF LORDS.
