Drinking In,
and Flowing
Out, the
Living Waters

5 June 2024

We cannot flow out
the living waters if we do not
first come to the Lord
to drink of Him!

One of the great promises in the Bible is in the word the Lord cried out on “the last day, the great day” of the Feast of Tabernacles:

He who believes in Me, as the Scripture said, out of his innermost being shall flow rivers of living water.”
— John 7:38

As the next verse, John 7:39, makes clear, the Lord is speaking here of the Spirit. So, if we believe in Him, we should have these “living waters,” the Spirit, flowing out from within us.

But, it seems few believers really have very much of this experience, and we ourselves may often feel short in this regard. Recently, I have appreciated that this is because we do not fulfill the condition the Lord spoke of in the previous verse:

“If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink!”
— John 7:37

That is, we cannot flow out the living waters from within us if we do not first come to the Lord to drink of Him!

So, if we desire to have such a flowing out of the Spirit, we need to make sure we are spending time to contact the Lord, just to be with Him, to appreciate Him, thank Him, and praise Him; as we do this, He will deal with us in so many ways, and then the living waters will begin to flow.

Find a verse in the Bible that tells us something of who the Lord is. For example, I always like Revelation 3:7:

These things says He who is holy, He who is true, He who has the key of David; He who opens and no one will shut, and shuts, and no one will open.

Then pray it back to the Lord:

“Lord, thank You, You are the one who is holy, who is true, who has the key of David….”

As we pray in this way, the Lord may touch us and show us something more of Himself. And as we practice this day by day, we will begin to experience the fulfillment of the Lord’s promise of having the living waters flowing out from within our innermost being.
