“Because He
Is a
Son of Man”

18 May 2024

The Lord will rule the earth,
not because He is
the unique Son of God,
but because His human living
showed He is the only one
worthy to rule over men

In John 5:26-27 the Lord says, according to the NKJV and a number of other versions,

“As the Father has life in Himself, so He has granted the Son to have life in Himself, and has given Him authority to execute judgment also, because He is the Son of Man.”

However, as Pember points out, in the Greek in this passage there is no definite article before “son of man.” Thus, the Lord is not saying here that the Father gave Him the authority to judge because He is the unique Son of God who became a man, even though He surely is that.

Rather, He is saying that He has been given this authority by the Father, because He became “a son of man,” and then, unlike any other man who has ever lived, He showed by His human living, and ultimately by the sacrifice of Himself, that He is truly qualified to rule among men as God desires.

This agrees with Revelation 5:9-10, where the twenty-four elders fall down before the Lamb and “sing a new song,” saying,

You are worthy to take the scroll
And to open its seals!
For You were slain
And have purchased for God
in Your blood
Some from every tribe and
tongue and people and nation,
And have made them
A kingdom and priests to our God,
And they shall reign
Upon the earth.”

And then in verse 12 the great heavenly throng cries out,

“Worthy is the Lamb who was slain
To receive
The power
And the riches
And the wisdom
And the strength
And the honor
And the glory
And the blessing!”

It is “the Lamb who was slain” to pay the price for our sins who is worthy to rule.

Today, so many men are foolishly fighting over who will rule on the earth for the few brief years of their life, but the Lord told us that in the end it will be given to “the meek” (Matt. 5:5). And no man has ever been more meek than the Lord Himself, who, rather than fight, even allowed His fellow men to put Him on the cross so He could die for their sins.

Surely, of all the men who have ever lived, He is the only one who is fit to rule. May we therefore join in with the heavenly throng to proclaim as well,

“Worthy is the Lamb!”
